Common Types of Rats in Houston, Texas

Norway Rat

Norway rats are large, heavy-bodied rodents that often stay close to the ground. Around Houston homes, they may nest near foundations, garages, crawl spaces, sheds, and cluttered outdoor areas. They can squeeze through gaps around utility lines, damaged vents, and foundation openings. Their droppings are larger than mouse droppings, and their chewing can damage stored items, food packaging, insulation, and wiring.

Roof Rat

Roof rats are common in warm Texas areas and are strong climbers. They often reach homes through trees, fences, rooflines, and utility lines. Once they get inside, they may nest in attics, walls, soffits, and upper storage areas. Houston homeowners often notice scratching overhead at night, greasy rub marks, droppings, or chewed materials in the attic. Roof rats are cautious, so control works best with inspection, baiting, and entry point correction.

Woodrat (Packrat)

Woodrats, also called packrats, are less common in dense Houston neighborhoods but may show up near wooded lots, older homes, sheds, and outdoor storage areas. They build bulky nests using twigs, leaves, insulation, paper, and other debris. Woodrats are usually more solitary than roof rats or Norway rats, but they can still contaminate spaces and damage materials. Homes near thick vegetation or brush piles may have a higher risk of activity.
